1. “It can’t happen here”

Avatar: WPA poster, ca. 1936–1937, for a play by that title based on the Sinclair Lewis novel about fascism happening in the United States. The poster features a silhouette of Lady Liberty in blue against a white background. The red flame issuing from the gray torch she’s holding fills the top of the poster, almost angrily, perhaps recalling the torches of democracy’s fascist enemies.
