“It can’t happen here”: WPA poster for a play by that title that was based on the Sinclair Lewis novel about fascism happening here, ca. 1936 or 1937. The poster features a silhouette of Lady Liberty in blue against a white background. The red flame issuing from the gray torch she’s holding fills the top of the poster in an angry sort of way, perhaps recalling the torches by democracy’s fascist enemy.
